Security Considerations for Commercial Glass Doors
No matter what your business is, you have something to protect. Whether it’s customers personal data or material things, your security considerations should start with the storefront doors you choose. The primary goal of providing employee safety and preventing theft means making sure you choose the right materials for the glass, hardware and mechanical function.
Safety First
With Aldora’s commercial glass doors, you don’t have to compromise style for safety. All our products are sleek and easy to open with a push of a finger while keeping out harm from the outside world. We offer a 3-point lock at locking style and 2-point lock at pivot style with high-grade stainless-steel assembly fasteners. Though, having a good lock is only a start.
Material Type
The type of glass and coatings selected are just as important, if not more important than the hardware selected. A glass lite can easily be broken into because it cracks and shatters. Aldora offers a range of heat-strengthened glass from Tempered, Laminated and Insulated Laminated depending on what the project specifies. We create laminated glass through a tempering process because tempered glass fractures in a spiderweb pattern due to the balanced stresses being distributed by the impact. The heat treatment makes it up to four times harder and stronger to withstand more pressure.
Another good option for interior glass entry doors and storefront windows is fire-rated glass to help stop the spread of smoke and flames in the event of a fire. Standard window glass will shatter at about 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and tempered glass can last to about 500 degrees F. Fire-rated glass, on the other hand, can typically survive heat over 1600 degrees F.
Impact Glass
If you’re choosing commercial glass doors for a building classified at risk like a hospital, fire station, or hurricane shelter, you should consider nothing less than Aldora’s Level E Impact Doors. Level E glass is tested to withstand with a 9-pound 2″ x 4″ shot at 80 feet per second. Aldora offers some of the largest tested Level E products for storefront and commercial doors, exceeding building standards and codes.
Aldora’s glass experts are in the lab to constantly, working to improve on their products. All Aldora products are Florida Building Code (FBC) approved and offer higher than average design pressures. Even our non-Level E can withstand +/–100 psf pressure, like our commercial pivot doors. Our impact glass products are built to withstand flying debris and high winds with no leaking. With double weatherstripping, these windows and doors also help prevent damage by acting as a strong barrier during tropical storm weather.
Outswing vs. Inswing Storefront Doors
Outswing and Inswing each have their advantages and disadvantages. However, when it comes to commercial glass doors, South Florida building code requires public buildings use doors that open out for safety reasons. Outswing doors can better resist wind force, are easier for people to exit and can reduce air leakage making them more energy efficient.
All-Glass Systems for Commercial Buildings
Glass entry doors are only the beginning for security measures. Aldora has full glass storefront systems for storefront windows to choose from, with impact doors among the largest available in the market – up to 12 feet. Additionally, Aldora offers complete interior designs to connect to the outside system. Choose from impact and non-impact options, with several different interlayer options between PVG and SGP, and enhance the safety for your staff and of the building.
